Additional Information:
These are one of many types of springtails. This one is less than 2mm long. Springtails get their name from their ability to spring into the air when threatened. In two of the images, you can see the bottom of the individual. The forked appendage is called a furca. It's held into place by the retinaculum (easier to see in the image that's taken a bit more from the side). Visit collembola.org for much more detailed information.
